Bandiagara day 2 (17/07/09)

The rooster woke me up at 6am again this morning, but that’s ok, we have to get up at 6:45 anyways. Liz was feeling better so after breakfast we both went in with Badry to the clinic. Today I wound up in the “lab” or as I would call it “the crying room.” I helped the guys that do the fingersticks for the routine tests done during the monthly visit (thick smear, hemoglobin and a blooded filter paper that’s used for DNA extraction later). It was interesting watching the reactions of the different kids; one little girl made me laugh. Somehow she knew exactly what was going to happen even before she came into the room; she hid her hands behind her back and refused to give them to anyone. Other kids were cheerful until they were stuck and then the look of betrayal on their face was really sad. Then there were some kids who thought nothing much of it all. Most interesting though, was that there didn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason as to who would cry their little heart out and who wouldn’t make a peep. The kids sometimes came in large groups (I saw a man drive up on a motorcycle with 2 little kids sitting behind him and 2 in front. But we managed to get through them all before noon.

After lunch we went back to the clinic, but there wasn’t much to do so we read and spent some time on the internet (however the blog website is blocked until after 5pm, so I’ve been a little behind keeping this up). At 6pm everyone came in for a meeting. Thera explained their different kinds of contracts (NIH intramural, extramural and others) and how it would affect their pay. From what I could understand it was a bit confusing, but also kind of repetitive (it wound up being sort of a long meeting). The meeting ended at about 8:30 pm and we came back to the house for dinner.
